Fergus

One day in the middle of February, an unneutered nine-year-old Scottie wandered out the woods of Northern Virginia and into the yard of our neighbors. He was such a filthy mess, with matted corkscrews of hair dragging to the ground, that only a confirmed Scottie-lover would have recognized his breed origins. A vet trip determined that he was suffering from bronchitis and a long-standing kidney infection, which fortunately responded to medical treatment. An intensive grooming session uncovered a dapper little gentleman with a cheerful nature.

Two weeks later, his owner surfaced. She seemed oblivious to the signs of his neglect, but fortunately was easily persuaded to turn ownership of Fergus over to us. Although he had only been with us a short time, Fergus showed little interest in the arrival or departure of his former owner. For the entire first year in our household he begged to be held every single evening, then finally relaxed when he realized he would always be loved. And once neutered, he stopped the marking behavior that had prompted his former owner to make him an "outside" dog kept in the barnyard.

Fergus lived to be over 16 years old, quite elderly for a Scottie. He was partially deaf and blind for his last few years, but never lost his affectionate good nature. He had a very sturdy heart, in more ways than one.
