Annie

Annie was a Scottish Terrier who had been abandoned by her family at a boarding facility in the Norfolk, Virginia area. During her stay there she was impregnated by one of the kennel owner's dogs and gave birth to a mixed-breed puppy (that the breeder was trying to pass off as a pure-bred Scottie). She was malnourished and abused, and Kate paid $125 to free Annie from this purgatory.

The vet didn't think Annie would live long -- large patches of her hair had fallen out, her gums were bleeding, some teeth had been broken, and she had a dangerously slow heart beat. But Annie defied all expectations for her early demise and lived another ten years. Despite her history of abuse, she was sweet-tempered and placid. Nonetheless, the neglect had lasting effects -- she was still anxious about being abandoned, had a ravenous appetite, and was terrified of thunderstorms (a phobia commonly displayed by abandoned dogs).
