Note from the artist: This work is an example of what I call my "storybook sketches." A particular image may come to mind, which in turn inspires a story vignette created entirely within my own head. Occassionally I may write down a couple of lines to accompany such sketches, and for "He Was a True Auld Boy" I had scribbled down the following in my sketchbook:

"The auld boy was a Scottie to his bones. Whether or not he knew exactly where he was going, he always went there with absolute confidence."

This pencil, ink and watercolor drawing was executed in a free, very personal style influenced by my fondness for children's book illustrations of old.
